About the Opportunity:

As an Outreach Teacher within Nyland School's SEMH Support Team, you will play a key role in enabling mainstream Primary Schools and Early Years settings to successfully support pupils with SEMH needs within their environment.

Our SEMH Support service prides itself on its long-standing history (over twenty years) of high-quality support and an outstanding reputation. We are a Swindon based service that focus mainly on Early Years and Primary aged children with SEMH needs.

What does the job ‘look like’?

This is one of our most frequently asked questions.

  • Firstly, the role is very much ‘mobile’, requiring the use of your own vehicle. Whilst we mainly support schools in Swindon, we also support some schools in Wiltshire.
  • Following a thorough induction (working alongside other team members to understand the role and associated processes and pathways), you will hold your own caseload.
  • Generally, you may visit up to 2-4 schools per day and each visit will be different, requiring you to build strong rapport with staff including SENCO, Class Teacher and Senior Leadership Team.
  • Following most visits you will be required to write high quality reports (reflecting the pupils SEMH needs) based on observations you will have completed in schools. In many cases your reports may be submitted to the Local Authority to evidence the pupil’s needs.
  • You will also be required to meet with parents and external agencies. Meetings could include TAC, ChIN or Child Protection.
  • Relationship building at all levels is at the core of this role - empathy is key.
  • Flexibility and good time management skills are a must, as there may be 'out of hours' meetings you are required to attend as well as record-keeping and paperwork to keep up to date.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Ideally hold QTS and be able to advise and support mainstream school staff
  • Be able to deliver interventions for SEMH pupils where required
  • Have strong planning, organisational and time management skills
  • Be able to plan and deliver training to school staff at all levels
  • Have strong working knowledge and understanding of safeguarding procedures
  • Have an exceptional understanding of varying SEN and SEMH needs as well as positive behaviour support strategies
